Class Description

Fine Art Foundations will introduce the fundamentals of art by exploring shapes and lines to understand the basic form of an object and will focus on composition and rendering skills. The objective of this course is to emphasize exploration and discovery through studio work.

Drawing projects are organized around a variety of media, selected to help students express and illustrate the design elements (line, shape, value, form, texture, space, color) and design principles (contrast, balance, repetition, variety, unity, movement, harmony). Students will be exposed to a variety of experiences, such as drawing, landscapes, still life, animals, animation, and perspective. Focusing on basic drawing skills, students will study the formal and technical problems of drawing as a medium for artistic creativity.

Willingness to get involved in the creative process is a more important requirement than the student’s talent or previous experience. Weekly sketchbook assignments are an important part of the course, and independent practice and application of learned skills are recommended for success.
