Ancient History

Greek Gods and Creatures

2-10 students Standard

If you told an ancient Greek you were going to buy some Nike shoes on Amazon while listening to music on Pandora, he’d stare at you like you were some nine-headed monster. According to him, Hermes wears the shoes, Pandora is the reason he’s miserable, and Amazons are the tall warrior women who will soon be arriving to arrest you for speaking nonsense. Don’t be that person!

Class Description

Come learn about Greek gods and creatures, and all the ways their mythology still lives on in our own culture: from Starbucks, to Versace, to Goodyear, to Maserati, to Hercules and Wonder Woman. The ancient Greek influence is everywhere! This course will introduce students to the big picture of Greek mythology, and then we will spend each class profiling a new Greek god and/or creature, all the while making any relevant modern-day connections.

  • Week 1: Greek god family tree (Uranus, Gaia, Titans, and the 12 Olympians). | Hades: the god of the dead and king of the Underworld.
  • Week 2: Zeus: King of Mt. Olympus and the gods therein; keeps the goddess Nike near him all the time. Cultural connection: athletic shoes.
  • Week 3: Hera: Zeus’ wife & Queen of the gods. Don’t dare make her angry
  • Week 4: Demeter: goddess of the harvest. If not for her, we wouldn’t have popcorn, cornflakes, or cornbread. She gave the Sirens their wings and later cursed them. Cultural connection: Starbucks.
  • Week 5: Poseidon: god of violent and unpredictable things like the sea, earthquakes, and storms. Set sail carefully, as he is easily angered and might use his three-pronged trident to do you harm. Cultural connection: Maserati.
  • Week 6: Aphrodite: goddess of love and beauty. She was born of another god’s terrible fate. She helped some of the other Olympians create the first woman, named Pandora. Cultural connection: music streaming.
  • Week 7: Apollo: god of many things including the sun, light, music, and knowledge. He has never told a lie.
  • Week 8: Artemis: goddess of hunting, archery, the forest, and the hills. Cultural connection: Hunger Games.
  • Week 9: Hermes: the messenger of the gods. He also had the coolest shoes. Cultural connection: Goodyear Tires.
  • Week 10: Dionysius: god of wine and crazy dancing.
  • Week 11: Ares: god of war. His parents (Zeus and Hera) didn’t like him; father of the Amazon women. Cultural connection: Wonder Woman
  • Week 12: Athena: goddess of wisdom and war. Zeus’ favorite child; helped kill Medusa. Cultural connection: Versace.
