Class Description

This Number Challenge Club introduces numerical concepts through games, visuals and stories. The purpose of this class is to give 1st and 2nd grade learners a fun relaxing environment to develop mathematical thinking and build a foundation of number sense. Using a variety of learning activities we will practice skills and develop problem solving strategies.  We will build an understanding of part whole relationships, the role of zero, and place value. Through games and visual activities we will compare numbers, learn how to estimate, and will use concrete objects to work on the concepts of relative size, different ways of representing the same quantity as well as practicing strategies that make addition and subtraction easier.

Topics covered:

  1. Working with and comprehending quantities up to 200- various ways of representing, comparing and computing quantities

  2. Greater than, less than, and equal to.

  3. Place value: meaning of each digit in multi digit numbers, uses for zero.

  4. Strengthen automaticity with doubles

  5. Area and spatial awareness: relative size

Class size: 4-10 students

About Jen Hudson

Jennifer has been homeschooling her two daughters for ten years and loves math games, literature, nature walks and hands on learning. She feels privileged to be able to educate her children and lead them on the path of life-long learning and help them develop their unique abilities and passions. She and her family love museums, beach days, card games and handicrafts. She taught kindergarten and first grades in public school for a few years after getting her Elementary Teaching Credential at Cal Poly Pomona. During the past two and half years she worked as an educational facilitator at a hybrid charter school where she fell in love with teaching math to young learners.
