Class Description

This one day class is being offered for Free during Appreciation Week. The following information is based on what a full course would look like:

Meet the Goops! A bunch of naughty boys and girls who learn the hard way how to behave!

This beginning story writing course is designed to foster a love of writing in each student whether they have difficulty writing or enjoy it. Through various Goop readings, children will hear stories and poems that will inspire and encourage their own Goop stories.

Through Goop story time, discussion, and instruction, learners will come to understand story structure and write Goop stories of their own. (Parental assistance may be required outside of class time with younger students.)

Learners will name and create their own Goop character with alliteration and write a funny story with a moral that will teach other kids not to be a Goop! They will also write a poem about their Goop (if time allows.) The final product will be a fun story you will treasure forever.

  • Through various readings of stories and poems, students will be introduced to the Goops. The Goops are naughty little boys and girls whose bad manners get them into trouble, but they always learn not to be a Goop in the end! An introduction to the four elements of storytelling, character, setting, problem, and conclusion will be discussed and evaluated using the Goop stories.
  • Learners will learn about the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing) with an emphasis on prewriting and planning their stories. They will choose a Goop name, a bad manner to write about, and a title using alliteration. They will focus on developing the beginning of their stories with the character and setting, how to transition to the middle of the story with transition words and add details about one specific day in the life of their Goop. Learners will finish planning their stories and start to write the first draft.
  • Learners will be introduced to descriptive writing using some of the P.A.I.N.T. with Your Words techniques which include Show, don't Tell, 5 sense descriptions, and figurative language. Learners will finish their stories and turn them in for evaluation. Learners will improve and revise their stories.
  • Learners will have an opportunity to read it to the class, continue to revise their stories, and create an original Goop poem.

Course Objectives:

*To introduce learners to beginning storytelling using the Goop manner stories as a guide and to create original stories and poems.
*To introduce elements of storytelling such as setting, beginning, middle, and end
* To teach learners about good manners and behavior

** This class is designed to foster a love of storytelling, and while good writing and sentences will be addressed, that is not the emphasis or goal of this class. For strong writing techniques, see my "PAINT with your Words" and "Perfectly Powerful Paragraph" classes.

HOMEWORK

Learners should be able to write on their own or they will need parental help.
If learners don't complete the assignments in class, they will need to complete them for homework.
Some students may not finish their stories during class, so it's the parents' responsibility to make sure the story is completed outside of class.

Homework may include watching videos that illustrate good and bad manners, finishing worksheets, and writing their story. Parental assistance is advised during the story writing process. Some students may not be able to finish their stories before the class has ended, so it's the parents' responsibility to see that the story is completed.

About Gina Conroy

I love when students get excited about writing, even reluctant writers. Whether they love to write or find it difficult, I make it fun and show them how to use their writing super powers!  After graduating with a degree in communications and journalism, I published several fiction and nonfiction books as well as hundreds of newspaper, magazine articles and blog posts. I hosted a podcast called Teen Writers Publish for teens of all ages based on the bestselling Amazon book “Release the Novel in You.”  While attending writing conferences for 20 years, I designed courses to teach my homeschooled kids how to write more descriptively. Aside from being a private writing tutor, I’ve taught in private schools, homeschool co-ops as well as writing programs to the public.  While there’s no greater reward than seeing a confused or frustrated child light up with understanding, I love challenging the gifted to reach their full potential. No matter where your child’s writing falls, I’ll encourage, challenge, and take their writing to the next level.  My guidance will inspire your child’s voice to be released, and my instruction will shape ideas into creative, cohesive, and impactful writing, which benefits every subject.
